Why does the exam say my microphone is in use by another app?
You are listening through Bluetooth. Turning the microphone on can cut the sound to Bluetooth hearing aids and headphones, so you may stop hearing the questions partway through. Before you begin, change your microphone to the one built into your computer or phone. Your hearing aids will keep playing normally. You can also switch to the speaker built into your device.
On Windows
- Right-click the speaker icon at the bottom-right of your screen.
- Choose Sound settings.
- Under Input, choose the microphone built into your computer, not your hearing aids or headphones.
- Come back to this page and carry on.
On Mac
- Click the apple icon at the top-left corner of your screen, then choose System Settings (System Preferences on an older Mac).
- Click Sound, then click the Input tab.
- Choose the microphone built into your Mac, not your hearing aids or headphones.
- Come back to this page and carry on.
On iPhone or iPad, Safari
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Centre.
- Press and hold the box with the sound controls, then choose your iPhone or iPad speaker instead of your hearing aids.
- Come back to this page and carry on.
On iPhone or iPad, Chrome
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Centre.
- Press and hold the box with the sound controls, then choose your iPhone or iPad speaker instead of your hearing aids.
- Come back to this page and carry on.
On Android
- Swipe down from the top of your screen to open quick settings.
- Tap the sound output button, then choose your phone speaker instead of your hearing aids.
- Come back to this page and carry on.

Why did the sound stop in my hearing aids or Bluetooth headphones?
The sound stopped reaching you partway through. This often happens with Bluetooth headphones or hearing aids: turning the microphone on can cut their sound. Switch to the speaker built into your device and try again.
