Social isolation is one of the modifiable risk factors named in the World Health Organization's 2026 dementia guidelines, and social engagement is one of its recommendations, for people with normal cognition and for those with mild cognitive impairment.
the association between social isolation and dementia risk is consistent across large studies, which is why WHO names it. The direction is less certain.
Withdrawal is also an early symptom. Someone who is finding conversation hard to follow often steps back from it years before anything is diagnosed, which means some of the association reflects early disease rather than causing it.
That ambiguity does not change what to do. Being connected is good for mood, for sleep, for physical health and for catching problems early, whichever way the arrow points on dementia risk.
