The sound stopped reaching you partway through. This often happens with Bluetooth headphones or hearing aids: turning the microphone on can cut their sound. Switch to the speaker built into your device and try again.

On Windows

  1. Click the small icon just to the LEFT of the web address at the top of the window.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
  3. If it already says Allow, the block is in Windows itself: open Start, then Settings.
  4. Go to Privacy & security, then Microphone.
  5. Turn on Microphone access, and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  6. Return to Google Chrome and start again.

On Mac

  1. Click the small icon just to the LEFT of the web address at the top of the window.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
  3. If it already says Allow, the block is in macOS itself: click the apple icon at the top-left corner of your screen and choose System Settings (System Preferences on an older Mac).
  4. Click Privacy & Security, then Microphone, and turn on Google Chrome.
  5. Quit Google Chrome completely and reopen it, then start again.

On iPhone or iPad, Safari

  1. Reload the page and tap Allow when Safari asks -- it usually asks again after a reload.
  2. If it does not ask: tap the small icon just to the LEFT of the web address (on most iPhones the address bar sits at the bottom of the screen).
  3. Tap Website Settings.
  4. Set Microphone to Allow, then tap Done and reload the page.

On iPhone or iPad, Chrome

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.
  2. Scroll down and tap Chrome.
  3. Turn Microphone on.
  4. Return to the exam and start again.

On Android

  1. Tap the small icon just to the LEFT of the web address at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Permissions, then set Microphone to Allow.
  3. Reload the page and start again.
  4. If it already says Allow, Chrome itself has no microphone permission: open the Settings app on your phone.
  5. Tap Apps, then Chrome, then Permissions.
  6. Tap Microphone and choose Allow, then start again.
