Cognitive health is the ability to think, learn and remember clearly enough to live the life you want. It is not a single thing, and it does not decline all at once.
Some abilities hold up remarkably well into late life. Vocabulary and accumulated knowledge often keep improving into the seventies. Others, particularly the speed of processing new information and recalling it unprompted, change gradually from much earlier than most people expect.
Knowing which is which matters, because it is the difference between ordinary ageing and something worth investigating.
Slower recall on its own is ordinary. A change in the pattern is not. The question worth asking is whether there is something you managed easily last year and cannot manage now, and whether the people around you have noticed the same thing.
in July 2026 the World Health Organization concluded that up to 45% of dementia risk could be prevented or delayed by addressing modifiable factors.
That figure is about populations, not individuals. It does not mean 45% of any one person's risk is under their control, and a diagnosis is never evidence that someone failed to do the right things.
The factors named include physical inactivity, tobacco use, alcohol, social isolation, air pollution, and conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. WHO recommends physical activity, a healthy diet, managing cardiometabolic conditions, considering hearing aids, cognitive stimulation and social engagement. It does not recommend vitamin or omega-3 supplementation in people without a diagnosed deficiency.
We covered the guidelines in full here, and there are pages on exercise, nutrition, sleep, social connection and daily habits.
the hardest thing about cognitive change is that it is measured against a memory of how you used to be, which is itself unreliable.
A single test score tells you how you compare with people of similar age and education. That is useful, but the range of normal is wide, and two people well inside it can be on entirely different trajectories.
What resolves that is having measured before. A result you can compare against your own from a year ago describes direction rather than position, and direction is what both you and your doctor want to know.
the Memory Exam is a screening test taken at home in ten to fifteen minutes. It is not a diagnosis and cannot tell you why anything has changed. Read more about tracking over time, how the exam works, or how it compares with other tests.
